Love on the Line by Deeanne Gist - a book review

Love on the Line by Deeanne Gist

I really liked this book. It has romance, suspense, mystery, excitement, and humor. It's a story about a Texas Ranger, a telephone operator, a train robber and his gang, and a precocious young girl. I was a little disappointed that there wasn't more of a faith and Christianity theme but to be honest, it doesn't claim to have that. It is a really enjoyable story with a respectful handling of the romantic story line. It starts out with an exciting train robbery and ends with ...an exciting train robbery. The main characters, Georgie, the telephone operator, and Luke, the undercover Texas Ranger, are at first glance, not at all suited for each other and you wonder if they ever will be. After all, Luke has to hide his true identity from Georgie and he has to 'take up' with some unsavory characters in order to keep his cover in tact. Georgie’s strength of character has made her a successful phone operator, living on her own, independent in a man's world. She is a crusader for bird preservation and wages a war against the local hat maker who uses body parts from real birds on his hats, and is successful in her quest.

I never found myself bored with this book or skipping paragraphs. Each sentence was interesting and important to the story. I'm not sure what year this story is supposed to have taken place but it seems like around the late 1800's to early 1900's. The author prefaces and ends the book with her historical research, so you know her depiction of the time period is accurate. I will be looking for more books by this author.

The Christmas Singing - a book review

The Christmas Singing, A Romance from the Heart of Amish Country by Cindy Woodsmall

The Christmas Singing (Chapter 1 Excerpt)

My review:

First of all, let me just say that I love Cindy Woodsmall’s books.  I think this might be the first short novel of hers that I have read.  I have to say that I was a little disappointed with this one.  I think it’s because in a short novel there isn’t a lot of time to develop the characters and delve into plot lines.  I think if there had been fewer characters, then there might have been time to really get to know the main characters.  That being said, I think this book set out to do what it was supposed to do.  It is a fast, enjoyable read.  Mattie, the main character, is a quirky, likeable girl, who has suffered betrayal and heartbreak.  When her cake shop burns down she is forced to return home and encounters her former fiancĂ©, Gideon. Since the time of their breakup, she has formed a relationship with Sol, and easy going, strong, quiet type, who has a passion for hunting.  As the story progresses, Mattie has to decide if she can forgive Gideon and if she should continue her relationship with Sol.  The ending is predictable, as most romance novels are, but it seems to end very quickly.

This novel also points out the different practices within the Old Order Amish. I appreciate that the author has personal knowledge and is friends with many Old Order Amish, so I trust her portrayals.

I think I would recommend this to someone who is looking for a light, fast read.

I look forward to Cindy’s next full novel.  She’s still one of my favorites!

From the WaterBrook Press website:

"After Gideon coldly broke her heart, can the warmth of the season revive Mattie’s hopes?
Mattie thought her childhood sweetheart adored her until he abruptly ended their engagement on Christmas Eve.

Three years later, will learning the truth behind his rejection restore her Christmas joy – or open the door to even deeper heartbreak?

Spend Christmas with the Amish in this story of love, romance, heartache, and restoration."
